eIDAS terminology

Here we have compiled a list of the most commonly used terms within the eIDAS domain and translated them in a way that we believe is both technically precise and easy to understand. The glossary is intended as a shared starting point, and we welcome input, discussion, and further development together with others working in and around the eIDAS domain.

Architecture and Reference Framework (ARF)

A description of the architecture of the digital wallet and the framework surrounding it.

Attestation scheme
Skjema for bevistype

A machine-readable description of the required and optional information that an attestation type contains.

Attestation provider (Issuer / EAA-provider)
Utsteder

A public or private organisation that issues and signs digital credentials to the user's wallet.

Attestation scheme provider
Skjematilbyder

A public or private organisation that defines and publishes the schema and rulebook for an attestation type.

Attestation type
Bevistype

A digital credential is of a given type that specifies the rules for issuing and using the credential, and what information it contains.

A data field in a digital credential that contains information about a person or an organization.

Digital wallet
Digital lommebok

An app or a website that securely stores your (or your organization’s) digital credentials and allows the user to share it when needed.

eIDAS Regulation

A common European framework for electronic identification and trust services.

EUDI Wallet (European Digital Identity Wallet)
Europeisk digital identitets-lommebok

A digital wallet certified in accordance with the requirements of the eIDAS Regulation.

Bruker

The person or organization that owns and uses a wallet.

Issuer / EAA-provider
Utsteder

A public or private organisation that issues and signs digital credentials to the user's wallet.

Issue

Transferring digital credentials to the user's wallet. This can be done, for example, by the user scanning a QR code that opens the credential in their wallet.

Level of Assurance
Sikkerhetsnivå

The level of assurance of a digital ID. It can be low, substantial, or high.

Person Identification Data (PID)
Personlig IDTeknisk: Personidentifikasjonsdata (PID)

The official European ID credential. All EU countries are required to offer their residents this.

A trust service provider is qualified if it meets specific requirements set out in the eIDAS Regulation.

Revocation

Marking a digital credential as invalid. Only the issuer of the credential can revoke it.

Explains what a credential type is and how it works, what information it contains, what each piece of information means, how the information is encoded, and how the credential is produced.

Selective Disclosure
Selektiv deling

Sharing only parts of the contents of a credential, that is, only selected pieces of information.

Trust Framework
Tillitsrammeverk

A set of rules and a technical framework that establish trust between the various actors in the digital wallet ecosystem.

Trust Service (Provider)
Tillitstjeneste

An electronic service provided by a service provider, normally in return for payment. Examples include electronic signing and electronic attestation of attributes.

Trusted list
Tillitsliste

A published list of qualified trust services.

Verifiable Credential / Electronic Attestation of Attributes (EAA)

A digital document that contains information that is digitally signed. Examples: driving license, certificate for tax and duties, etc. Can be added to, stored in, and shared from a digital wallet.

An organisation that receives and checks the validity of a credential.
